Retrofitting heritage buildings: Aligning Heritage Building Information Management with DIN standards

Conference: 30th International Symposium CIPA 2025 Seoul, ‘Heritage Conservation from Bits: From Digital Documentation to Data-Driven Heritage Conservation’, Seoul, 25–29 August 2025

This paper explores how Heritage Building Information Management (HBIM) can support the retrofitting of historical buildings by integrating requirements from relevant DIN standards. Four standards are analysed (DIN EN 16853, DIN EN 16883, DIN EN 17680, and DIN EN 16247-2), addressing conservation, sustainability, energy efficiency, and condition assessment. The study identifies gaps in the current IFC 4.3 schema, which lacks properties to represent heritage-specific data, and proposes new property sets to close these gaps. The aim is to enhance interoperability, improve preventive documentation, and strengthen decision-making for sustainable conservation and retrofitting of heritage buildings.
