Reconnecting waste: Exploring digital fabrication technologies for circular reuse of demolition-waste bricks

‘Trajectories’, Conferences for Artistic and Architectural Research (CA2RE), Hannover, 26–28 March 2026

This talk explores how design and digital fabrication can support the reuse of irregular bricks reclaimed from demolition sites in Hamburg. Through a research-through-design approach, it investigates how material documentation, 3D scanning, and digitally fabricated dry-joint connectors can translate damaged geometries into possibilities for architectural assembly and future disassembly. Material irregularity is approached as a starting point for design, while interviews situate these explorations within the institutional and practical conditions shaping reuse. The presentation outlines an emerging methodology connecting material engagement, digital craft, and the organizational challenges of circular construction.
