Re-entering the social: Urban political ecology, poststructuralism, and ecological imaginaries

Conference: Neue Kulturgeographie 2023, Halle, 26–28 January 2023

This talk investigates the possibilities for intersections between the more traditional historical-materialist urban political ecology research focused on urban metabolism with the social and cultural aspects of urban life through the incorporation of poststructuralist approaches. This is highlighted empirically by focusing on geographical imaginations of urban transformation in Vancouver. It is argued that a cultural as well as material analysis provides new insights in regard to the functioning of the Vancouver real estate metabolism and how it brings forward the notion of large-scale Indigenous real estate development.
