Das transformative Potenzial großer Projekte: Eine organisationsinformierte Annäherung

The talk addresses the transformative impact that large-scale projects and events have on both the places where and on the organizational and institutional systems in which they are realized. Building on empirical research into the London 2012 Summer Olympics and on Hamburg’s new Elbphilharmonie, I argue that large-scale interventions, on the one hand, due to their exceptional nature, open up options for change. The same exceptionality, on the other, narrows the scope of future actions by limiting the benefits of large ventures to those who participate in them and by restricting the lessons these projects offer to what is applicable to similar ventures.
