Cities and the authoritarian turn

Political Geography Research Group (PolGRG) webinar, Royal Geographical Society with the Institute of British Geographers (RGS-IBG), in collaboration with the Urban Geography Research Group, online, 18 June 2026

As authoritarian politics accelerate, cities are becoming ever more central arenas of contestation and control, at times advancing alternative, cosmopolitan visions, while also enabling far-right mobilizations. This webinar brought together critical political and urban geographers to reflect on how cities mediate, evade or resist these dynamics. As one of four discussants, I contributed insights from my research on regressive shifts in municipal planning administrations.
