Samar Abdelaal is an architect and urban researcher specializing in post-conflict and post-colonial urban recovery in the MENA region. Samar holds a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Mansoura University and a double master’s degree in urban design from Brandenburg University of Technology (BTU), Germany, and Alexandria University, Egypt. Her master’s thesis focused on the reconciliation of urban segregation in Port Said, critically examining the implications of colonial planning theories on the contemporary built environment. Bridging academic research and professional practice, her work centers on cultural heritage preservation, integrated urban recovery, and participatory planning approaches. Her research interests include historic district revitalization, urban equity, and multilevel urban governance. Since 2022, she has worked as a research associate, lecturer, and project coordinator at Brandenburg University of Technology. In 2025, she joined the DFG research training group ‘Urban future-making’ as an associated doctoral researcher.
