Before joining the DFG research training group ‘Urban future-making’, Lucas Oettinger worked in various architectural practices in Stuttgart and at the Hamburg-based office NOTO – Basista Becker Jansen. He has also taught first-semester students in sculptural design and freehand drawing at the University of Stuttgart, where he completed both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in architecture and urban planning. Lucas’s research lies at the intersection of architectural design and ecology. It draws upon an artistic research project first developed during a residency at the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) and later continued as part of his master’s thesis, which explored spontaneously emerging ecosystems in urban environments. His current work builds on this foundation, investigating how ecological processes and non-human agencies can inform architectural design practices.
