Jeanette vom Baur is a Hamburg-based civil engineer dedicated to sustainable urban development through the preservation and adaptive reuse of existing buildings. She holds a master of science in civil engineering from TU Braunschweig, where she specialized in building preservation, construction materials, and construction management. During and after her studies, she gained practical experience in site supervision while working for a construction company. She later moved into project management, overseeing construction and renovation projects for the City of Hamburg. These experiences heightened her awareness of the enduring predominance of new construction projects and deepened her understanding of the challenges and opportunities in revitalizing existing structures. In her research she therefore examines barriers to the sustainable utilization of existing buildings and identifies enablers to enhance renovation activities. Jeanette advocates for a comprehensive method of evaluating existing structures that extends beyond immediate financial considerations to include environmental impacts, cultural significance, and long-term societal benefits.
