Re-politicising urban futures: Speculations, struggles, scales

Conference: Urban Speculations: Cities, Technologies, Futures, Leuphana University Lüneburg, 4–6 February 2025

Amid the multiple planetary crises of the present, the active shaping of urban futures has become a central terrain of political conflict and social struggle. Against the dominance of tech-driven urban speculations from above, and in variant recourse to what Shannon Mattern (2021) has called ‘other urban intelligences’, our panel aims to variously re-politicize the making of urban futures. This task is pursued with an eye to different future-making practices and activities situated across a variety of geographic scales and along shifting timescapes and temporalities.
