Navigating urban futures: Exploring NbS upscaling discourses, practices, and relations in reimagining human-nature relationships

This article aims to deepen the controversial concepts of NbS and upscaling, which are mainly discussed within scholarly literatures on transition, governance, and urban experiments. It explains how these literatures bring advantages and disadvantages to the concepts while fundamentally leaving the problems of ‘what, how, and why to upscale NbS’ unresolved. Stemming from future studies, the paper suggests an alternative understanding of NbS upscaling by considering it as an act of futuring in which discourses, practices, and relations are intertwined to create a socio-natural imaginary.
